Itineraries

On this 21-day trip through Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, you will experience different regions of arguably the most beautiful country in South America. In the highlands, you will explore the colonial old town of Quito with your English-speaking guide before traveling to the tropical mountain cloud forest of Mindo. Butterflies, hummingbirds, and mountain toucans fly past thundering waterfalls among bromeliads and tree ferns. Deep in the forest, at the Mashpi Amagusa Nature Reserve, you can spot the rare Schiller’s Tanager before heading to the northern “Province of Lakes”, Imbabura. Here you will visit the colorful Saturday market of Otavalo and hike at the “guinea pig lagoon” Cuicocha. Continue to the Cayambe Coca National Park for another hike in the remote Paramo highlands and relax in the hot springs of Papallacta. Follow the “Avenue of the Volcanoes” to Cotopaxi National Park and the beautiful spa town of Baños. From here you will visit the breathtaking waterfalls of the Pastaza Valley. At the highest mountain in the country, the imposing Chimborazo (6268 m), you can climb with your guide to the Condor Lagoon at 5100 m. In the small Andean village of Guamote you will visit the colorful traditional Thursday market before continuing south to the Inca ruins of Ingapirca. After visiting the beautiful colonial city of Cuenca, you will travel through the Cajas National Park to the coast to the port city of Guayaquil, known as the “Pearl of the Pacific”. Finally, you will fly to the unique Galapagos Islands. During an extensive island-hopping tour, you will get to know the 3 most important inhabited islands. On day and half day tours you will get to know the flora and fauna of the “enchanted islands” as well as the life of the people in the small port towns.
Day 1 - Arrival in Quito
Flight to Quito, arrival in the afternoon. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel in the center of the new city in about 1 hour. The rest of the evening is free. The hotel’s excellent restaurant serves Ecuadorian specialties and international dishes

Day 2 - Quito – Middle of the world – Mindo
After breakfast, your English-speaking guide will pick you up at your hotel and take you on a tour of the colonial old town. You will visit the Jesuit Church “La Compañia”, the Monastery of San Francisco with its Colonial Art Museum and the Neo-Gothic Cathedral “Basilica”. You will then drive to the equator line to the “Middle of the World” where you will visit the Ethnographic Museum. You will then drive to the hummingbird paradise “Los Armadillos” and continue into the tropical cloud forest to the small village of Mindo, situated at an altitude of 1200 m, which you can explore on a short tour in the evening.

Day 3 - Mountain cloud forest of Mindo
Today you will visit the butterfly farm and take a cable car ride over the treetops into the cloud forest. After another cable car ride, you will hike to several waterfalls in the Nambillo Valley. On the way you can take a refreshing dip in the river. Back in the village, visit Doña Alicia’s unique orchid garden, where you can see more than 300 species of orchids, some of them endemic, as well as many exotic bromeliads and heliconias. Relax in the evening at the hotel pool.

Day 4 - Mashpi Amagusa Nature Reserve - Otavalo
After breakfast, you will leave Mindo and drive to the Mashpi Amagusa Nature Reserve. Here you can observe various iridescent tanagers, including the endemic green tanager (Chlorochrysa phoenicotis), as well as parrots and toucans. You will then visit the archaeological museum of the pre-Inca Yumbo culture in Tulipe. After another stop at the viewpoint of the Pululahua volcanic crater, we continue north to Otavalo, arriving at your beautiful hacienda just outside the city in the early evening.

Day 5 – Cuicocha Lagoon and Otavalo Market
Today you will drive to the nearby Cotacachi- Cayapas Nature Reserve. Here you will hike at an altitude of about 3000 meters along the crater rim of the beautiful volcanic lake. You will also visit the park’s small interpretive center and return to Otavalo in the early afternoon. Around the Plaza de Ponchos, vendors from all over the country sell their wares. In the afternoon, you have had enough time to explore the famous Saturday Market and take a short walk through the eucalyptus forest of Peguche to the waterfall of the same name.

Day 6 - Cayambe Coca National Park
After breakfast, you will leave Otavalo and drive into the eastern highlands to the Cayambe-Coca National Park. Here you will hike up to 3700m to a hidden waterfall and on to the Baños and Anteojos lagoons. If you are lucky, you may see condors, a white-tailed deer or even a spectacled bear. Afterwards you will drive to the fantastic “Termas de Papallacta”. Relax in the evening under the starry sky in the most beautiful thermal baths of the country at an altitude of 3350 m. A spa area with sauna and massages is also at your disposal.

Day 7 - Cotopaxi National Park
After breakfast, you will take a short walk through the endemic forest along the river. You will then drive south on the “Avenue of the Volcanoes” into the Cotopaxi National Park. You will take a short hike along the Limpiopungo Lagoon and, weather permitting, climb to the refuge at 4,864m. At the Limpiopungo lagoon, you will do a loop walk right in front of the active Cotopaxi volcano (5897m). After visiting the interpretive center, you will continue towards the Amazon region to the small town of Baños. After checking into your hotel, you will take your first short town tour in the evening.

Day 8 - Waterfalls of the Pastaza Valley
Situated at 1800 meters, Baños is the perfect place for hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities. You will take a trip to the waterfalls of the Pastaza Valley. You can swim at the Ulba Falls, hike into the gorge at the “Manto de la Novia”, cross an adventurous suspension bridge to the waterfall, and take the cable car back to the other side. Continue to the thundering “Devil’s Cauldron” at Río Verde. On the way back, visit the “Casa del Arbol” with its famous “Swing at the End of the World” and hike downhill from the “Café del Cielo” to the Statue of the Virgin and back to Baños.

Day 9 - Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve
Today you will return to the highlands to the Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve, where you can see numerous vicuñas. From the first refuge of Ecuador’s highest mountain, the Chimborazo (6268 m), you can climb to the second refuge and on to the Laguna del Condor (5100 m) in about 45 minutes in good weather. The mountain, called “Taita” (father) by the locals, is the place where the earth is closest to the sun. The tour continues to the Colta Lagoon, where you will visit the oldest church in the country, and on to the small Andean village of Guamote, where a delicious dinner awaits you.

Day 10 - Guamote market - Ingapirca Ruins
Early in the morning, you will visit the authentic indigenous market of Guamote, which is held every Thursday, and the kindergarten, which is supported by the guesthouse. Then you will continue south on the Panamericana highway. A scenic route will take you to Ingapirca, the most important Inca ruins in the country. After visiting the archaeological complex and the museum, you will drive to the beautiful colonial city of Cuenca, where you will check into your hotel in the heart of the old town. In the evening you will take your first short tour of the city.

Day 11 - Cuenca
In the morning, you will take a tour of the colonial city center, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our tour will take you through the cobblestone streets lined with old colonial houses. You will see colonial churches, convents, old mansions, and flower-filled plazas. You will visit the New and Old Cathedrals, the Flower Market, the Mercado “10 de Agosto”, a small Panama Hat Museum, and the Archaeological Museum of the Central Bank. The rest of the afternoon is at your leisure.

Day 12 - Cajas National Park - Guayaquil
Today you will drive into the Cajas National Park, where you will get to know the “Toreadora” Lagoon and make another stop at the “Tres Cruces” viewpoint at 4167 meters. Afterwards, you will take a breathtaking 4000-meter descent to the Pacific coast. In Milagro, you will get to know an interesting cocoa farm project of the small farmers’ cooperative UNOCACE. Continue to the coastal metropolis of Guayaquil, where you will visit the iguana park right in front of your door, and take a walk along the boardwalk to the Santa Ana viewpoint.

Day 13 - Flight to Galapagos – San Cristobal Island
After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport where you will say goodbye to your guide. Your flight will take you to San Cristobal Island, Galapagos. Here you will be met and transferred to your hotel. In the early afternoon, you will be taken to “La Loberia” Beach. Together with your private National Park guide, you will take a short hike along the coast to the cliffs of “Las Negritas”. In addition to pelicans, masked boobies, and blue-footed boobies, you may also see the rare “Tropical Bird” here. Afterwards, there will be plenty of time on the beach to swim and snorkel with the sea lions.

Day 14 - San Cristobal Island
The day is at your leisure. Join a snorkeling shared tour to Kicker Rock, a tour to the highlands (optional*), or go on a hike on your own. The capital of the Galapagos has a lot to offer! Visit the interpretation center across from “Playa Man” Beach. From here, a trail leads to “Carola” Beach, the Charles Darwin statue, and “Tijeretas” Bay, a great place for snorkeling. From the viewpoint above the bay, the trail continues for 2 km over hill and dale to the secluded dream beach of Baquerizo, where sea lions, iguanas, and sea turtles can be seen.

Day 15 – Tortoise Farm “Primicias” - Tortuga Bay Beach
Early in the morning, you will take the speedboat to Santa Cruz, where you will be met at the dock in Puerto Ayora. You will be taken to the highlands of the island and visit the tortoise farm “Primicias”. Your English-speaking National Park guide will explain the way of life of these giant reptiles. After the visit, you will be transferred to your hotel. In the afternoon, take a short hike on your own to the well-marked dream beach of Tortuga Bay. You will hike 2.5 km through the dry forest along the large powdery sugar beach, and another kilometer to the right to the small bay of Playa Mansa, where you can swim and explore the shore by kayak.

Day 16 - Academy Bay Tour – Navigation to Isabela
Today you will take a tour with an English-speaking National Park guide around the bay of Puerto Ayora, where you will see the beaches of “Playa de los Alemanes”, “Playa de Perros”, the rocky canyon of “Las Grietas” and the shark channel. There will be time for swimming and snorkeling. You will return to the dock around noon. In the early afternoon, you will be transferred from the hotel to the dock for a 2-hour public speedboat ride to Isabela Island. You will be met at the dock in Puerto Villamil and taken to your hotel. Take your first short walk along the beach at sunset.

Day 17 - Tintoreras Islet Isabela
You will take a tour with an English-speaking National Park guide to the nearby Tintoreras Islet. You will see many iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and with a little luck, some penguins. Afterwards, you will have time to swim and snorkel with sea lions, sea turtles, and white-tip reef sharks. You will return to the village around noon. In the afternoon, walk along the wooden boardwalks of the mangrove forests to the Arnaldo Tupiza Breeding Center (2 km), where various species are prepared for release into the wild. From there, take the road on the right for 250 meters to the Flamingo Lagoon, where the large pink birds can usually be seen.

Day 18 – Sulfur Mines in the Crater of the Sierra Negra Volcano
You will be picked up from your hotel early in the morning and driven to the highlands of the island. You will be driven to the edge of the crater where you will begin a hike into the volcanic crater with your English-speaking guide. After 2.5 km you will reach the most active area of the crater, where it usually smells like rotten eggs. The spectacular scenery with the yellow rocks caused by the constant sulfur emissions is breathtaking. On the way back to Puerto Villamil you will visit an organic farm where you can taste pineapples, sugar cane and citrus fruits. After about 6 hours you will be back at your hotel.

Day 19 - Wall of Tears - Navigation to Santa Cruz
This morning is free. Visit the “Wall of Tears” (Muro de lágrimas), 7 km away, on your own, the easiest way to get there is by rental bike. On the way, you will pass small bays, hidden beaches, mangrove tunnels, and other signposted attractions. From the memorial built by convicts in the 1950s, a path leads 500 meters to the fantastic viewpoint “El Radar”. In the afternoon, you will be taken from your hotel to the dock for a 2-hour speedboat ride back to Santa Cruz Island. You will be met at the port of Puerto Ayora and taken to your hotel.

Day 20 - Return flight
After breakfast, you will be picked up at the hotel and taken to the north side of the island to the Itabaca Channel. Here you will take the ferry to Baltra Island and then the shuttle bus to the airport. You will fly to Guayaquil or Quito for your connecting flight back home.

ON THE “AVENUE OF THE VOLCANOES” TO THE ALTAR.

On this hiking and trekking tour on the “Avenue of the Volcanoes”, named by Alexander von Humboldt, you will discover the most beautiful places of the Ecuadorian Andes and the five highest mountains of the country. Upon your arrival, you will first visit the colonial old town of Quito with your English-speaking guide, who will accompany you throughout the trip. You will then travel to the Cayambe Volcano and on to the “Province of Lakes”, Imbabura, where you will hike around the Cuicocha “Guinea Pig Lagoon”. Another trekking tour takes you along the “Path of the Andean Bear” to the hot springs of Papallacta before you see condors in Antisana National Park and climb to the refuge in Cotopaxi National Park. After an extensive hike around the emerald green volcanic lake of Quilotoa, you will continue to the highest mountain in the country, the imposing Chimborazo, where you will reach the Condor Lagoon at an altitude of 5100 meters. Well acclimatized, you will then embark on a three-day trek to the legendary Laguna Amarilla of El Altar volcano. This crescent-shaped volcano is located in the middle of the Sangay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with nine peaks surrounding the crater lake, some of which have not been climbed. Without a doubt, it is one of the most spectacular places in the country. At the end of the trip, you will drive to the waterfalls of the Pastaza Valley and have plenty of time to relax in the hot thermal baths of the beautiful spa town of Baños de Agua Santa. A detailed itinerary with distances, elevations, and approximate times will allow you to assess the difficulty of this very special, fantastic highlight trek in the Ecuadorian Andes.

Day 2: Quito City Tour
Your English-speaking guide will pick you up at your hotel and take you by cable car to the Pichincha Mountains, where you will enjoy a short hike at an altitude of almost 4,000 meters. In the afternoon, you will go on an interesting city tour where you will get to know the most important places and historical sights of the old town, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will visit the Jesuit Church “La Companía”, the Convent of San Francisco and the Cathedral “Basilica”.

Day 3: “Guinea Pig Lagoon" of Cuicocha
After breakfast, you will be picked up at the hotel by your English-speaking guide and drive north to Otavalo. After leaving your luggage in the hotel you will drive to the “Guinea Pig Lagoon” Cuicocha in the Cotacachi Cayapas Nature Reserve. Together with your guide, you will take a short hike along the edge of the crater of the enchanting lake, at the foot of the mostly snow-capped Cotacachi volcano. On the way, you will see many orchids and bromeliads. On the way back you will visit the small town of Cotacachi, famous for its traditional leather goods.

Day 4: Cayambe Volcano
Today you drive to the small town of Cayambe. Here you will board the 4×4 vehicles that will take you to the Ruales Oleas Refuge. The Cayambe volcano is located on the equator line and is the third-highest mountain in the country at 5790m. You will hike on a circular trail up to the glacier and past a small lagoon back to the starting point. Today we will spend the night in a very special place full of history, the hacienda Guachalá was build in the 16th century, and ist the oldest hacienda of the country.

Day 5: Papallacta Hot Springs
Today we head into the Amazon region to the Cayambe Coca National Park. Shortly after the pass at over 4000m the “Way of the Bear” begins. Through the humid Paramo highlands and past beautiful mountain lakes, we hike through the lonely landscape to the waterfall “La Milagrosa”. Along the way, you may be lucky enough to see deer, Andean foxes, and even spectacled bears. Enjoy the rest of the afternoon at the country’s most beautiful hot springs, the Termas de Papallacta. A spa area with a sauna and massage is also available.

Day 6: Antisana National Park
After a last dip in the volcanic hot springs, you will drive to Antisana National Park. At 5753 m, the snowy giant of the same name is the fourth-highest mountain in Ecuador and one of the best places to see vultures and condors. At the Mica Lagoon, you will do a loop hike to the viewpoint. After a stop at the Secas Lagoon, we will continue south to the Cotopaxi National Park. Your lodge is located in the middle of the National Park with a fantastic view of the second-highest active volcano in the world. Before sunset, take a short walk around the lodge

Day 7: Cotopaxi National Park
You will drive to the parking lot and then hike up to the Jose Ribas Refuge. After a hot coca tea, you can continue to the snow line of the second highest mountain in Ecuador at 5897 m and enjoy the fantastic view if the weather is good. After the descent, you will drive to the Limpiopungo Lagoon, where you will do a loop hike. After a late lunch in the National Park, you will drive into the Western Cordillera of the Andes via Latacunga and Zumbahua to the unique emerald-green Quilotoa Lagoon.

Day 8: Quilotoa Lagoon
Today you will hike almost exclusively along the crater rim around the enchanted Quilotoa Lagoon. First, we descend to the Shalala viewpoint and then climb steadily to the highest point of the hike, Cerro Juyende. You will be back in the village in the early afternoon and then continue south via Ambato to Chimborazo. Your lodge is located in the middle of the nature reserve with views of the highest mountain in the country.

Day 9: Chimborazo Nature Reserve
After breakfast, you will drive to the first refuge. On the way, you will see many of the vicuñas that have been released into the wild here. From here we hike slowly and steadily up to the second refuge at over 5000 m and on to the Laguna del Condor. The Chimborazo volcano at 6268 m is the highest mountain in the world measured from the center of the earth and the place where the earth is closest to the sun. In the afternoon, you will leave the nature reserve and drive via Riobamba to the small village of “La Candelaria” to your hacienda, where a warm dinner will be waiting for you

Day 10: Collanes Valley
The trek starts early in the morning. After about 1 hour uphill on a dirt road, the actual trail into the Sangay National Park begins. You will hike through mostly humid terrain to the Collanes Valley. Mules will carry your main equipment and provisions. In the early afternoon, after several breaks, you will reach the refuge, where you can warm up by the open fire. The nine gigantic snow-capped peaks of the Altar (5319 m) are glowing in the setting sun. The fully equipped kitchen is at your disposal for cooking a hearty dinner together.

Day 11: Laguna Amarilla
Today you will hike through a Polylepis forest up into the volcanic crater to the spectacular Laguna Amarilla. Your guide knows the best route. Due to the decreasing sulfur content of the extinct volcano, the lake is more green than yellow. Anyway, you will still have the opportunity to take a refreshing dip in the icy waters. The scenery of this unique place is breathtaking. Some of the snow-covered peaks of the Altar, which the indigenous people call Capac Urcu (The Chief Mountain), remain unconquered to this day. In the early afternoon, you will begin the descent and hike back to the refuge.

Day 12: Baños de Agua Santa
After loading your mules, you will hike down the Collanes Valley and leave the Sangay National Park. You will return to your hacienda around noon to say goodbye to the muleteers. After a hot shower and a refreshing lunch, you will drive to the beautiful spa town of Baños de Agua Santa at 1800m. After settling into your hotel, you will have time to explore the town in the late afternoon. In the evening, relax in the hot thermal springs of La Vírgen, just below the waterfall of the same name.

Day 13: "Manto de la Novia" and "Devil's cauldron" waterfalls
Today you will make an excursion towards the Amazon region to the waterfalls of the Pastaza Valley. You can swim at the Ulba waterfall and at the “Manto de la Novia” and “Devil’s Cauldron” waterfalls you will go on short hikes over adventurous suspension bridges and take a cable car ride over the canyon. Lunch will be served in the small village of Río Verde before returning to Baños. Optionally, you can rent a bicycle for this excursion. The rest of the afternoon is free.

Day 14: "Swing at the end of the world" - Travel to Quito
After breakfast we will drive to the Ulba Valley to the Casa del Arbol and the “Swing at the End of the World”, from where we will have a fantastic view of the active Tunguragua volcano (5023 m), this if the weather is good. Afterwards we will hike down to Bellavista to the “Café del Cielo” and then to the statue of the Virgin of Baños and from there over 600 steps to the cemetery and back to the village. In the afternoon we return to Quito, arriving at our hotel in the early evening.

Day 15: Departure or extension
This morning is at your leisure in Quito. Revisit the colonial old town, the “Casa de la Cultura museum“, or the “Capilla del hombre” of the artist Guayasamín in the Bellavista district. In the afternoon, transfer to the airport for your flight back home. Hasta Luego, Ecuador!

Important notes:
- The itinerary is designed to ensure slow, optimal acclimatization to altitude. Plenty of fluids, coca tea, and even an aspirin can help with acclimatization.
- All hikes are easy to moderate and can be done with a normal to good level of fitness and adequate acclimatization to hikes at altitudes of over 4000 meters.
- Due to the climatic conditions, the ascent to the altar is usually not possible from March to July.
- You need to bring good hiking boots, rain protection, a large backpack (or suitcase) and a daypack, headlamp, sleeping bag, hat, gloves, bathing suit, towel, and trekking poles (optional).
- Your main luggage will be left at Hacienda Releche on day 10.
- With the help of your English-speaking guide, we will buy your provisions on the way to Hacienda Releche on day 9.
- On days 10 and 11, we will cook dinner together. Breakfast on the 11th and 12th will also be prepared together.
- A fully equipped kitchen is available for cooking at the Collanes Refuge.
- There is plenty of fresh spring water available, but as a precaution, it should be treated with Micropur or similar, or boiled.
- The food and your luggage will be carried by mules and must not exceed 18 kilos per person (80 pounds total per mule). If you are overweight, you can hire another mule on the spot; one muleteer will accompany you for every two mules.
- Rubber boots are the best choice for the wet and often muddy trail through the Collanes Valley. With the help of your English-speaking guide, we will purchase rubber boots in Quito or Riobamba in sizes up to 43. If you have larger feet, please bring your own.
- At the Collanes Refuge you will spend two nights in a shared room with your own sleeping bag. Temperatures can drop below freezing at night.
- All garbage must be removed from the National Park. We will take enough garbage bags with us.
