Itinerary

Your English-speaking guide will pick you up at your hotel and together you will visit the colonial old town of Quito, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will have a great view from one of the towers of the Neo-Gothic Basilica. Then visit the market in Plaza Arenas and continue to Plaza Grande before visiting the gilded Jesuit church “La Compañía”. You will visit the Colonial Art Museum in the San Francisco Monastery and the Carmelite Monastery before strolling through the traditional La Ronda alley to Plaza Santo Domingo. Here you will also visit the convent and climb the church tower. After about 5 hours you will be back at your hotel.

In the morning you will visit the colonial center of Quito, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. You will visit the Cathedral Basilica, the Market Plaza Arenas, the Plaza Grande, the Jesuit Church “La Compañía”, the Monastery of San Francisco, the Monastery of El Carmen Alto, and the Fray Pedro Bedón Colonial Art Museum in the Plaza Santo Domingo. In the afternoon you will travel to the so-called “Middle of the World”, right on the equator. Here you will visit the Ethnographic Museum and the Chocolate Square. Weather permitting, we will make a detour to the viewpoint of the Pululahua volcanic crater before returning to Quito in the late afternoon.

Your English-speaking guide will pick you up from your hotel early in the morning and drive south along the “Avenue of Volcanoes” to Cotopaxi National Park. Here you will visit the park’s interpretive center before driving to the parking lot at 4659 m. From here you will slowly ascend almost 250 meters to the refuge and, if the weather is good, you can hike a little further up to the glacier. You will then drive to the Limiopungo Lagoon, where you will hike around for about 90 minutes. In the national park, you can see wild horses, Andean gulls, vulture falcons, and with a bit of luck a condor. You will return to your hotel in Quito in the late afternoon.

Your English-speaking guide will pick you up at your hotel and take you to the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes. After a stop at over 4000 m, we continue to Papallacta and the Cayambe Coca National Park. Here you will take a short hike to the “La Milagrosa” waterfall hidden in the forest and to the Baños lagoon. In the solitude of the high plateau, you may see Andean foxes, white-tailed deer, and, with a little luck, spectacled bears or condors. Afterwards, you will drive to the hot springs of Papallacta, where you will have lunch and then take a 1-hour hike through the endemic forest along the river before relaxing in the thermal baths. A spa area with sauna and massage is also available. You will return to your hotel in Quito in the early evening.

Together with your English-speaking driver guide who will pick you up at your hotel, you will drive north to the equator line. Here you will visit the Ethnographic Museum in the so-called “Middle of the World”. Continue to the viewpoint of the Pululahua volcanic crater and the hummingbird paradise “Los Armadillos”, where you will have lunch. Afterwards, you will drive to the private reserve Puma Sacha, where you will see the waterfall “El Rayo” and visit the archaeological museum of the Yumbo culture in Tulipe. Via Pacto you will drive deep into the tropical mountain cloud forest to the Mashpi Amagusa reserve, where you can observe numerous iridescent tanagers, hummingbirds, parrots, and toucans at close range. Return to your hotel in the early evening.

Early in the morning, your English-speaking driver-guide will take you north via Otavalo to the Cotacachi Cayapas Nature Reserve. Here, at the foot of the often snow-capped Cotacachi volcano (4939 m), lies the famous “guinea pig lagoon” Cuicocha. You will visit the small interpretive museum before starting your hike around the beautiful mountain lake. The first part is uphill until you stop for lunch at the highest point at 3490 m. You will see many flowers along the way, including some orchids and bromeliads. You will need about 4 to 5 hours to cover the total distance of almost 12 kilometers. After the hike, you will have the opportunity to take a boat trip around the two islands of the lake before returning to Quito, where you will arrive at your hotel in the early evening.

You will be picked up from your hotel and taken to the Teleferico. The cable car will take you up to the Pichincha mountains at almost 4000 m. Together with your English-speaking guide, you will hike steadily up to the “Cueva del Oso”. From here you take the longer but easier path over the dune “El Arenal” to the summit of the volcano at 4696 m. The endemic vultures, curiquingues, known for their lazy flight, often perch here. On the way, you will see many Andean flowers and chuquiraguas that only grow at this altitude. After a refreshing box lunch at the summit and a fantastic view, you will descend to the cable car. You will be back at your hotel in the late afternoon.
